| Close to Nowhere By Linda Jones Mitford fans ‘come home’ • All the Mitford fans have gone home, but they sure made an impact on Holly Springs this past weekend! And I have to say, they sure are a cheerful, happy bunch of people. Most
of them arrived as strangers to each other, at least in person. They’ve
corresponded on their message board for years, but seeing a picture of
someone and typing them notes sometimes daily, is just not the same as
actually getting a huge smile and a big hug. Many
of the “Mitfordites” dropped by the newspaper office Friday afternoon.
It was such fun to listen as Sue talked with them for a sidebar story
to go along with a story Beth had planned for their meeting and lunch
Saturday at the Episcopal church. There is enough about Father Tim and Jan Karon in our newspaper this week that I don’t need to repeat any of it. But
the impression that group of folks left when they left our office was
something else. I smiled for the rest of the afternoon. I’ve
been purusing their website since they were in the office Friday
afternoon and gave us the web address (which I am ashamed to admit is
in all the books and I never once looked at it, even though I’m a
computer and website-aholic). In case you’re wondering -- www.mitford
books.com. That’s not Jan Karon’s official site, that is the fan club’s official site. And they are devoted fans! Ask
them why they like the books (I love the books also) and the almost
instant response is “I’m a Christian and I respond to what she writes.” Melibob,
one of the fans who visited us and one of the original members of the
fan club, said that while some of the fan club members were not all
“church-goers,” all have the same ethics and principles that Karon
espouses. I do know that they sure made for fun tourists! • Going back to gadgets -- I’m so embarrassed. You have to promise not to tell the iPhone/Apple guy about this! I
couldn’t make my new iPhone download an album off my computer at work
-- even with help from Jessica, a college student with the same phone! Called
the iPhone/Apple folks -- the nice guy had me restart my computer, my
new phone, everything. When nothing worked, he suggested I change USB
ports. As soon as I unplugged it from the power strip where it was charging and plugged it into the computer, it began working. All I said was, “Wow, changing the port worked!” I am so embarrassed!
