News BriefsIda B. Wells activities scheduled July 10-12 The annual Ida B. Wells Birthday Celebration will be held July 10-12 in Holly Springs. The theme this year is “Preserving, Protecting, Promoting – Ida B. Wells’ Legacy.” The opening ceremony is set for 11 a.m. Friday at the Ida B. Wells Museum, 220 Randolph Street. There will be tours of the museum with a catfish lunch (donation $7). Afternoon activities include music and storytelling, “Art At Its Best,” and a reception from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. featuring Michelle Duster, author of “Ida: In Her Own Words” and great-granddaughter of Ida B. Wells. Gospel hour begins at 6 p.m. with a barbecue dinner ($7 donation). Guests will gather at the museum at 8 a.m. Saturday to begin a Holly Springs tour ($40 adults and $30 students) – including the Marshall County Historical Museum, Montrose, Rust College and the Ida B. Wells Post Office. The group will eat lunch at Phillips Grocery. The Ida B. Wells Commemorative Banquet will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. at Annie’s Restaurant (donation $25). Speaker is Dr. Gemma Beckley of Rust College. Activities will conclude Sunday with breakfast at Asbury United Methodist Church. Snow Lake celebration begins Saturday at 5 Snow Lake Shores celebrates Independence Day beginning at 5 p.m. July 4 at the beach. The boat parade starts at 5:30 p.m. and is an informal affair this year with no contests. Concessions open at 5 p.m. Live music begins at 5 p.m. and Arlington Station band plays at 6 p.m. A professional-grade fireworks show is set for 9 p.m. “We’ve got our largest fireworks show ever,” said committee co-chair Rick McLarty. “There is no alcohol, no pets and no coolers. Bring your own lawn chair.” Rain day is July 5. South Reporter closing Friday for holiday The South Reporter office will be closed Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day. The newspaper office will be open regular hours on Monday, July 6. Deadlines for next week’s edition remain the same – Monday at 10 a.m. for classified ads and Monday at 5 p.m. for news and all other advertising, including display ads and legal notices. |
