plied the waters at Snow Lake last weekend as the community put on the
first July 4th bluegrass festival. The star of the activities was the
dedication of the new dam, which replaced the old one that blew out
last year. Rainfall in late June saves county from drought Except
for the rainfall recorded the last week of June, Marshall County would
have had one of the driest months on record. The total amount of
rainfall was almost seven inches; all except one-half inch took place
between June 24-June 30. 25 Years Ago - July 5, 1984 The South Reporter changes its format The
South Reporter has joined hundreds of other newspapers throughout the
country this week in changing its format from an eight-column newspaper
to six columns to help make newspapers more uniform in size. First cotton bloom Allen
Brothers Farm in Slayden produced the first cotton bloom this season.
Glen Skelton, Rudell Allen’s nephew, brought the bloom by The South
Reporter office. The Allens planted 800 acres in cotton this year. 50 Years Ago - July 2, 1959 Mary Margaret Finger honored A
Coke party honoring Mary Margaret Finger of Byhalia, bride-elect of
Alston Jones of Holly Springs, was held Friday at the home of Mrs. T.I.
McCrary in Byhalia. The honoree was attired in imported cotton with a
round neckline, cap sleeves and a box pleated skirt. Bea Hasselman entertains with party Bea
Hasselman entertained with a morning party on Friday honoring Shelby
Farris of Vicksburg, the house guest of Mrs. George Buchanan Jr. Party
sandwiches, cookies and iced Cokes were served by the hostess. Guests
were Kay Thompson, Ellen Parnell, Rita Cochran, Becky Lou Humphreys,
Bobby Tyson, Martha Phillips, Betty Wynne, Mary Frances Rather, Frances
Doxey, Margaret Brown, Pam Moyer, Dottie Smith, Selwyn Greer, Faith
Winter, Joan Hurdle, Nancy High, Pat Evans, Phoebe Evans, Constance
Lanier, Charlotte Holly and Jean Davis of Natchez.
