Horton hired to lead Cards By BARRY BURLESON Coach Matt Horton anticipates success at Potts Camp High School. He was recently hired to lead the boys basketball program, and he likes what he sees in the talent pool. Football players working By BARRY BURLESON It’s summer, but football coaches and players are still busy. Take for instance Byhalia High School’s Markeith Washington and his Indians. “We have to get better,” the coach said. “We’re not stopping. We’re working out every day.” That includes weight training and some seven-on-seven competition. Behind The Scoreboard Lakers win another title It’s wrap-up time. The Orlando Magic had a “must win” situation on Sunday. And if there were ever a game in which all the cards were stacked against someone, this would be it. In all of NBA playoff finals history, no team has ever been able to recover from a 3-1 deficit. Twenty-nine have been trampled in the annals dust trying to overcome the stigma. Thompson, Jenkins, Gulledge selected for state all-star game By BARRY BURLESON Coach Jason Thompson is going down I-55 in July to the state’s top basketball all-star game, and he’s taking a couple of Marshall County players with him. Thompson, who has led H.W. Byers to back-to-back Class 2A state championships, will be the head coach for the North girls in the game, featuring players statewide from all classifications. It is sponsored by the Mississippi Association of Coaches. Every camper receives a T-shirt as well as a camp basketball. Kennedy said each camper will learn the fundamentals of basketball while having fun.
