Main Street needs financial backing By SUE WATSON An enthusiastic David Beckley, president of Rust College and chairman of the Holly Springs Main Street Association board, went to the mayor and aldermen June 2 asking for financial support the city promised. He said Main Street will need $26,000 to mostly pay the salary of the executive director. Rust College partnered with the city to bring Main Street to Holly Springs. Stimulus dollars paying youth for summer work By SUE WATSON Fifty youth between ages 14 and 24 have been offered summer jobs in Marshall County, thanks to a program included in President Barack Obama and the U.S. Congress’ federal stimulus package. The youth, who will be working either in clerical, janitorial or outdoor jobs for seven weeks, will be assigned and supervised by existing personnel with the cities, the county or the school districts, according to Sharon Gardner, executive director for the Northeast Mississippi Planning and Development District. Marshall County Relay for Life postponed due to weather Due to inclement weather on Friday, June 12, the Marshall County Relay for Life at Sam Coopwood Park was postponed. The committee is in the process of rescheduling a new date for Relay for Life. An announcement will be made soon. The Relay for Life committee looks forward to seeing you soon as we continue our fight to eradicate this dreadful disease called cancer. Fugitive arrested in Holly Springs The Holly Springs Police Department, in conjunction with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and the Oxford Police Department, arrested an armed robbery suspect. Chief Robert Pearson said Ralston Jannice, aka, Valentine Jannice, 40, of Oxford, was wanted for armed robbery by the Oxford Police Department. Travel association pushes ‘Travel Promotion Act’ By SUE WATSON A bill in the U.S. Senate (S.1023) is designed to reduce the federal budget deficit by promoting foreign travel within the United States. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the Travel Promotion Act would reduce the federal budget deficit by $425 million over 10 years. Leadership graduation Thursday in Holly Springs Graduation ceremonies for the Leadership Marshall Class of 2009 will be Thursday, June 18, at Annie’s Restaurant in Holly Springs. Byhalia police officers respond to variety of calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 43 calls during the past week. Chief Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 4; motor vehicle accidents, 3; burglaries, 1; disturbances, 1; domestic calls, 2; escorts, 1; animal-related calls, 1; juvenile-related calls, 1; assists, 4; medical assistance, 5; fires, 3; miscellaneous calls, 16; and damaged property, 1. Byhalia police officers made four arrests during the past week. The Byhalia Police Department was also very busy in the aftermath of Friday evening’s storm. Victoria residents hear presentation on census Robert Jamison with the U.S. Census Bureau was a visitor at the Victoria Community Center Wednesday, June 10, at the request of Marshall County Supervisor George Zinn III. County airport to get taxiway By SUE WATSON Marshall County Airport officials will apply to the Federal Aviation Administration for a grant to purchase extra land. The property would be used to build a taxiway the length of the runway, according to Bill Mobley, executive director of the Marshall County Industrial Development Authority. Zoning denies ‘rodeo’ request By SUE WATSON The Marshall County Zoning Board denied a request to hold horse show/rodeo events twice monthly on property located at 2973 Cayce Road. |
