A
New Albany man was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an
accident in which injuries occurred, according to sheriff Kenny
Dickerson. The accident occurred on Wilson Golden
Road around 6:30 p.m. on April 25 when a motorcycle rider lost control
of his vehicle, fell off, and was run over by a pickup, he said. The
victim, Brian Dumont, of Peachtree City, Georgia, was riding the
backroads on a tour from Atlanta to Oklahoma City when he lost control
of his vehicle on Wilson Golden Road. Dickerson
said a pickup driven by suspect Chester Davis Jr., 36, of New Albany,
ran over Dumont after he was thrown from his motorcycle. An ambulance
was called and Dumont was transported to the hospital and Davis,
afterward, left the scene in his pickup, a burnt orange Avalanche,
Dickerson said. The pickup was damaged on the right-front and passenger side when the truck left the road and hit a tree during the accident. Witnesses
provided information about the vehicle allegedly driven by Davis and
the vehicle was found behind a residence in the Waterford area. “It took five days to locate and seize the vehicle,” Dickerson said. The
investigation was brought to a successful completion and a search
warrant for the vehicle was issued by Judge Earnest Cunningham, he said. The
pickup was moved to two different locations after the accident in
alleged attempts to avoid prosecution of the driver, Dickerson said. Davis
turned himself in to authorities at the Marshall County Sheriff’s
Department on June 4. He was charged with leaving the scene of an
accident with injuries and was later released on $5,000 bond, the
sheriff said. As with many investigations, an
anonymous tip helped investigators locate the vehicle and develop a
suspect in this case, Dickerson said. “Of course,
we thank the public for having sincere interest, along with our
interest, in providing the best in public safety, as was in this case
and often is in many unrelated cases,” Dickerson said. “An anonymous
tip helped lead to the arrest of this suspect believed to have left the
scene of an accident.”
