| Bid date set for bypass paving By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Phase II, paving and striping, of the North Holly Springs Bypass will get underway this summer. The Marshall County Board of Supervisors authorized a bid opening for July 13 at 11:30 a.m. Final
construction of the bypass was delayed for over a year after fuel costs
pushed construction bid prices for the original project several million
dollars over the estimated cost. A U.S. Department of Transportation
fund, established to stimulate the economy, brought forth the
much-needed, several million dollars required to complete the project
this summer.

supervisor since late last summer, has hired Larry Miller to take on

Three organizations have consolidated office space in order to provide better service to the community. The
Holly Springs Tourism and Recreation Bureau, Chamber of Commerce and
Main Street all moved into one office at 148 East College last week.
The tourism and chamber offices moved from the Yellow Fever House at

Lesure elected mayor in Potts Camp • Towns pick aldermen By BARRY BURLESON Editor Ricky Lesure emerged the winner Tuesday night in a two-man race for mayor of Potts Camp. He
received 135 votes to Casey Mayer’s 97, according to uncertified vote
totals by machine. Lesure will replace Mayor Jimmie Collins, who did

Dedicated firefighter remembered By SUE WATSON Staff Writer County
firefighters, emergency and ambulance service workers, law officers and
employees with the Marshall County Correctional Facility joined a Potts
Camp family in saying goodbye to one of their own Friday. J.C.
Pruitt Jr. was laid to rest at Temperance Hill Cemetery in Potts Camp
after a homecoming celebration held at Calvary Baptist Church in Holly

Arrests made in feed theft case By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Local
law enforcement has made three arrests and charged the suspects with
grand larceny in the investigation into theft of animal feed from
Cargill Animal Nutrition in Byhalia, according to sheriff Kenny

Springs’ new police headquarters, to open soon, will provide a much
needed morale boost for the entire force which has been in need of a
clean, spacious and environmentally controlled space for years.
Pictured are chief Robert Pearson and officer John Norman. Office space
is ample. The building has showers and lockers for male and for female
officers, a detective’s bureau that includes office space for four
detectives, a receptionist and interview rooms, plus two kitchenettes,
weapons and ammunition lockers, a spacious property room, a Saliport
with 360-degree camera coverage, a holding cell, fingerprinting and
intoxilizer stations, numerous work stations, a large conference room,
a large training room that can be divided into two rooms, a new radio
and multichannel bay station for dispatchers, and electronic security
and authorized access. The public access areas are equipped with
bullet-resistant glass. The front door is equipped with a buzzer that
will direct an officer to the front door after hours. |
City police respond to burglaries The Holly
Springs police station is scheduled to begin moving to its new
headquarters at 538 J.M. Ash Drive in Holly Springs on June 5. Full Story
School district honors retirees • ‘Teachers instill character’ By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
Holly Springs School District honored its own teachers for their
dedication to the profession at a ceremony in the high school cafeteria
Wednesday of last week. Nine retiring teachers
with a total of 272.75 years teaching service were presented plaques of
appreciation and seven teachers/administrators were recognized for
having missed no days of school the last year. Full Story
Norton returning to Ole Miss Will Norton,
dean of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism, will
return to the University of Mississippi July 1 as founding dean of the
