Holly High splits with Chicago foe By CLAUDE VINSON Head coach Naylond Hayes extended an invitation to one of his former players (at Rust College) now turned head coach at Orr Academy, a public funded school from Chicago, Ill., to play Holly High during the holiday break. Lady Hawks, Hawks down Booneville Holly Springs High School went into enemy territory and took a pair of games from Booneville Tuesday, Dec. 30. The Lady Hawks got 20 points from JaShanta Walker in a 57-44 victory. Katia Isom added 14. The Holly High girls, coached by Wilbert Beard, came out of the starting gate quickly. They led 18-6 after one quarter and 28-13 at the half. Booneville got closer in the third but the Lady Hawks outscored the host team 18-8 in the fourth to earn the 13-point win. The Hawks took the nightcap 60-40 over Booneville, thanks in large part to a 21-9 run in the fourth quarter. Marcus McKinney was the top gun for coach Naylond Hayes’ squad. He scored 14. Timothy Oliver followed with 10. Holly High was up 32-22 at the half. Indians enjoy winning week By BARRY BURLESON The Byhalia boys got the post-Christmas portion of their schedule off to a strong start. Coach Michael Neal’s Indians won two of three games at the Raymond Tournament and then beat Collierville, Tenn., at home. Northwest Ranger Classic By CLAUDE VINSON The H.W. Byers Lady Lions made their third trip to the holiday classic at Senatobia High School. They were matched against the Lady Cougars of North Panola December 29.
Behind The Scoreboard Bowls galore The collegiate bowl bashing, which had begun on December 20, was in full bloom this past week and weekend. The SEC had eight contenders and already five of them are winners. The only one left undecided at this writing is the daddy of them all – the BCS Championship Bowl on January 8 in Miami. There was another Mississippi team in the melee, the Golden Eagles of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. So if all you CUSA fans want us to count them, we will. They were three-point winners over Troy State in the New Orleans Bowl. MA on court during holidays By BARRY BURLESON Marshall Academy ventured into the land of the public schools Saturday and left with two wins. • Lady Pats, Pats lose one, win one at Brookhaven By BARRY BURLESON The semi-final round of the Brookhaven Tournament proved to be a bit rugged for Marshall Academy. But the Lady Patriots and Patriots regrouped for the consolation contests.
