Academy baseball team wrapped up the regular season at 20-12 and
entered the Class AA state playoff quarter-finals this week. Marshall 6 FACS 5 With
a bye during the first round of Mississippi Private School Association
playoffs, MA entertained First Assembly Christian School from Cordova,
Tenn., April 14. The Patriots came away with a 6-5 come-from-behind victory to improve to 20-11 on the year. Full Story
Bryson going to Grambling State By BARRY BURLESON Editor Tedarian Bryson, a leader at H.W. Byers on the court and in the classroom, is taking his skills to a Division I school. Bryson has signed a basketball scholarship with Grambling State University in Louisiana. Full Story

realize that it is only April and that football season is still eons
away, but the NFL draft was completed this past weekend and some
collegiate teams just ended their spring drills last Friday. And,
really and truly, some of us are just grasping at any excuse to “talk

Many enjoy Pilgrimage 5K Les Jumper and
Courtney Dewalter were the overall male and female winners in the first
Holly Springs Pilgrimage 5K Walk/Run on April 18. The challenging course through the streets of the city started and ended on the downtown square. There were 55 participants Full Story

Byers coaches Jason Thompson and Sylvester Kilgore and six of their
players (above) will participate in the 1A-2A East-West All-Star games
Friday and Saturday, May 29-30, at Northeast Community College in
Booneville. The game is for seniors (Class of 2009). Seated, from left,
are Symone Gorman, Ciara Seldon, Amanda Jones and Rachel Jones; and
(kneeling, same order) are Kilgore, Tedarian Bryson, Fred Jones and
Thompson. Coach Thompson and coach Bruce Coffey of Calhoun City will
help lead the 1A-2A West Girls, while Kilgore and coach Jessie Terry of
Ashland will be in charge of the 1A-2A West Boys. (Right) Brionne
Gulledge and Jason Thompson of H.W. Byers will represent the school and
Marshall County in the North-South All-Star Basketball Game July 20 at
Mississippi College in Clinton. Gulledge, a junior, will play for the
North team, which will be coached by Thompson. |
MA athletes going to state meet
Several Marshall Academy Patriots will compete in the Mississippi Private School Association Overall Track Meet. The big event is set for Friday and Saturday, May 1 and 2, at Mississippi College in Clinton. The
top four finishers in each event from the North State meets and the top
four finishers from the South State meets will converge to do battle
for the class AA championships. Full Story

In order to get its
men’s basketball program back on track, Northwest Mississippi Community
College has tapped into the Memphis high school ranks and hired one of
the city’s most successful coaches ever. Jimmy Adams has been named head coach at Northwest after a 16-year run at Raleigh-Egypt High School. Adams hopes to turn around a Ranger basketball program that has posted a combined record of 35-43 the last three seasons. Full Story
MA golf team wins tournaments, hosts North State at Kirkwood The Marshall Academy golf team recently qualified for the North State AA Tournament. The Patriots were the hosts for that tournament, which was scheduled Monday of this week at Kirkwood National in Holly Springs. The MA golf team finished the regular season with two tournament wins. The
Patriots placed first out of 10 teams in the recent Lee Academy
Invitational at Clarksdale Country Club. Their team total was 328. Full Story
