Potts Camp saw its baseball season end last weekend in the first round of the Class 1A state playoffs. The Cardinals dropped two straight – 14-7 and 13-3 – in a best-of-three series versus Wheeler. “We’ve
had some injuries, and we were short-handed going into the series,”
coach Michael Loden said. “I knew that would be problem for us against
a good Wheeler team. But I thought we played pretty well in both games.” | Photo by Barry Burleson

The Cardinals showed some grit in game one at home Friday evening. They fell behind 7-0 and 9-1 but kept battling. “We got down early and made a game of it,” Loden said, “and I’m proud of the kids for that.” Austin Goode pitched the full game for Potts Camp. “He walked four in the first inning but settled down after that,” Loden said. “I thought he did a pretty good job.” Jesse Shaw started on the mound in game two, with Sawyer Goode throwing in relief. “I thought our pitching was pretty good,” he said. It was the second straight season for a young Potts Camp squad to compete in the playoffs. “It’s
always good to get in the playoffs and get that experience,” Loden
said. “We had a couple of games along the way (in the regular season)
we should have won and let them slip away.” The team includes just three seniors – Wade Russom, Steven Vanzant and Dustin Minor. “We played most of the season without two of them (Russom and Vanzant) due to injuries,” Loden said. “I
have two juniors and then 10th grade on down. Two ninth graders and two
eighth graders started all year. This is a young group; they’re still
growing up.”
