Patriots win district championship
The Marshall Academy baseball team went into enemy territory last week and wrapped up its third straight district crown.
The Patriots receive a first-round bye and will open playoff action next week in the quarter-finals.
The Holly Springs High School boys track team keeps adding to the school’s trophy case.
The Hawks won their fourth straight district championship Thursday at Charleston.
And the final results weren’t close.
Potts Camp sweeps first in district
Potts Camp’s boys and girls eased to district track championships Saturday at Coldwater – the Cardinals winning by 23 points and the Lady Cards by 20.
The Cardinals scored 77, well ahead of second-place Coldwater with 54. Taking third and fourth, respectively, were Ashland (42) and Strayhorn (31).
Lady Lions bring home first-place trophy
The H.W. Byers Lady Lions captured what is believed to be their first district track championship ever Thursday at Coldwater.
Wheeler eliminates Cardinals

Potts Camp saw its baseball season end last weekend in the first round of the Class 1A state playoffs.
The Cardinals dropped two straight – 14-7 and 13-3 – in a best-of-three series versus Wheeler.

Last week’s column had already been strung up to dry by the time Dr. David Beckley (president of Rust College) had returned from the Final Four and dropped by The South Reporter office. For the last few years, David has brought a memento back from the collegiate finals for yours truly. I really appreciate the gift and gesture, but there is a nagging feeling that he is just “trying to rub it in.” Thanks, David, I’ll remember you when (and if I ever) go to the Super Bowl.
MA athletes qualify for North State
Several Marshall Academy athletes will be moving on to the North State Championship at Washington School in Greenville this week.
