Lady Lions bring home first-place trophy

The H.W. Byers Lady Lions captured what is believed to be their first district track championship ever Thursday at Coldwater.

“It was a nail-biter,” coach Sylvester Kilgore said. “We won by one point.”

The Byers girls tallied 127 points to Water Valley’s 126.

The Byers boys placed second, finishing behind Water Valley.

The top four finishers from the district meet advance to regional competition this Saturday at Coldwater.

Girls results

100 meter dash – second, Amanda Jones, 12.81; fourth, Rachel Jones, 13.21.
200 meter dash – first, Amanda Jones, 27.32.
800 meter dash – first, Raven Gant, first, 3:01.54; second, Laniqua Collins, 3:04.14.
1600 meter run – first, Laniqua Collins, 6:38.
3200 meter run – first, Kourtney Coleman, 15:27.
4x100 relay – first, Kenyata Gulledge, Rachel Jones, Amanda Jones, Teresha Woods, 53.14.
4x200 relay - third, Dionna Walker, Tavashia Hale, Teresha Woods, Kenyata Gulledge, 1:56.75.
4x400 relay – first, Wanda Hassell, Raven Gant, Tavashia Hale, Laniqua Collins, 4:58.
High jump - third, Kourtney Coleman, 4-6.
Shotput – third, Ciara Seldon, 26-9; fourth, Alexis Hardaway, 25-3.
