The Marshall Academy junior
high track team found itself in a back-and-forth battle with host Lee
(Clarksdale) April 8 for the District 1-AA championship. In the end, the Patriots surged ahead and claimed the first-place trophy with 77.5 points. The Colts finished with 72. MA earned points in the following events (all times and distances not available). Shotput – second, Josh Petree, 37-8. Long jump – first, Chase Ferrell, 18-6; second, Elgin Lafever. Discus – second, Davis Kelly; fifth, Chase Ferrell. High jump – second (tie), Neil Murphy. Triple jump – third, Chase Smith. 300 meter hurdles – fourth, Andy Burleson, 50.58. 4x200 meter relay – first, Neil Murphy, Elgin Lafever, Chase Ferrell, Davis Kelly, 1:42.18. 4x800 meter relay – third, Dakota Dailey, Banks Carlisle, John Wesley Ray, Clay Casey. 4x100 meter relay – first, Davis Kelly, Neil Murphy, Chase Ferrell, Elgin Lafever. 49.31. 110 meter hurdles - third, Andy Burleson. 100 meter dash – first, Elgin Lafever, 11.6; third, Neil Murphy, 12.4. 1600 meter run – fifth, Chase Smith. 400 meter dash – third, Neil Murphy, 59.53. 800 meter run – third, Clay Casey; fifth, Dakota Dailey. 200 meter dash – first, Elgin Lafever, 24.7; third, Chase Ferrell, 25.8. 3200 meter run – fourth, Chase Smith. 1600 meter relay – second, Andy Burleson, Davis Kelly, Neil Murphy, Chase Ferrell.
Susan Rodgers, the school’s athletic director, leads the track program along with coach Keith Wicker. “The boys showed tremendous heart,” Rodgers said. “They competed harder than I’ve ever seen to get points for the team.” She
said the MA junior high girls, even though they did not receive any
ribbons, showed improvement this season. It’s a young team, including
some sixth graders. “They’ve worked hard, and we’re trying to build a program for the future,” Coach Rodgers said.
