Patriots capture district crown
The Marshall Academy junior high track team found itself in a back-and-forth battle with host Lee (Clarksdale) April 8 for the District 1-AA championship.
In the end, the Patriots surged ahead and claimed the first-place trophy with 77.5 points. The Colts finished with 72.
MA earned points in the following events (all times and distances not available).
Susan Rodgers, the school’s athletic director, leads the track program along with coach Keith Wicker.
“The boys showed tremendous heart,” Rodgers said. “They competed harder than I’ve ever seen to get points for the team.”
She said the MA junior high girls, even though they did not receive any ribbons, showed improvement this season. It’s a young team, including some sixth graders.
“They’ve worked hard, and we’re trying to build a program for the future,” Coach Rodgers said.
