| Close to Nowhere By Linda Jones Abbeville pine I have decided that I watch way too much television — especially DIY and HGTV. There
are almost no quilting shows on TV so I watch the Food Network, which
is not dangerous; and the home improvement shows, which are extremely
hazardous! Wasn’t too bad for a while. I painted
cabinets and put a new counter and sink in my bathroom — one of those
“new” vessel sinks with a waterfall faucet. It’s wonderful! And it
wasn’t really hard. So, on to the kitchen! I took down a cabinet, put shelves up instead and painted it all. My
niece Sister and I had picked out a lovely shade of lavender — it
turned out really purple. But, paint is not that expensive, so... Then Pop said I had to stop with the cabinets, so work could begin on the floors. Our
dishwasher had leaked a couple years ago and unobserved, it continued
to dribble until the floor in the kitchen and adjoining hall had
turned into spongeboard instead of floorboards. We were lucky not to
have pitched through the floor to the ground below! Have you seen those commercials? The ones about Brazilian cherry hardwood floors? Well,
I now have Abbeville pine! Really. There was a tornado a year or so ago
that ripped its way through Abbeville, which is just south of
Waterford. Pine trees were everywhere. Pop’s friend Chris (not to be confused with son Kris) knew someone with a sawmill who turned the trees into planks. Chris
then used his woodworking stuff (he remodels homes, nicely, I might
add) and turned the planks into smooth planks and those planks are now
laid out beautifully on my floor. So, I have Abbeville pine. I have to admit I was skeptical. I was envisioning an entirely different-looking floor. This one is beautiful. Remodeling
has been rough and is not getting better yet. No hot water all weekend
because a dishwasher line was accidentally cut. No water in my kitchen
at all. Didn’t matter, because I didn’t have a sink or counters anyway. Monday night, I had a sink with running water and happily washed dishes for an hour or so. Still can’t walk on the floor though. I am anxiously counting the days until Jane and I leave for Paducah and the quilt show — and the absence of sawdust! Eight days from Tuesday!
