Wins VFW essay contest
Anna
Miller, a seventh-grade student at General Ray Davis Middle School,
received books and a check from Robert Tienman, a Veteran’s of Foreign
Wars Post 5290 representative. Anna, won the 2009 Patriot’s Pen Contest
sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Her
essay, written on the topic of “Why America’s Veterans Should Be
Honored,” discusses the adage “freedom isn’t free” and outlined three
reasons why veterans should be honored. These included risking their
lives for our country, maintaining our freedom and securing our rights
and showing the ultimate love of country through service. For her post-
and district-winning essay, Anna received prizes totaling $250. She
also received three books, two for her personal collection and one
donated in her honor to the Davis Middle School Library. Quite
appropriately, the donated volume is a biography of Gen. Ray Davis, the
highly decorated Marine Corps officer for whom the school is named.
Anna is the granddaughter of Johnny and Laverne Westmoreland of Potts
Camp. Reprinted from the Rockdale Citizen, Conyers, Ga. |
