Andrea Martre, longtime head coach of the Southwest Lady Saluqis, said “winners like winners.” That’s
just one reason she signed H.W. Byers senior Amanda Jones to a
basketball scholarship Thursday at the Marshall County school. Southwest
Tennessee Community College, located in Memphis, had a bit of a down
year this past season, going 13-12. But in the 2006-07 and the 2007-08
campaigns they went a combined 51-3, won conference championships and
lost in the regional title contests. Jones was
one of the standout players who led the Lady Lions to back-to-back
state crowns. H.W. Byers went 70-10 the past two years. She averaged 19.6 points, five rebounds, 3.4 assists and eight steals per game in her senior season. “Her
athletic ability is unbelievable,” Martre said about Jones. “And with
H.W. Byers’ style of play, she will fit in. We try to play up-tempo.
She’s quick.” She one of the reasons for the Lady Saluqis’ down year was lack of guard play. “The
biggest thing I wanted to do was find the best guards in our area,”
Martre said, “ones who can come in and fit our style of play.” Jason Thompson, head coach of the Byers Lady Lions, said he was confident Jones would progress to the next level. “It’s
a great honor knowing that her hard work and efforts have paid off,”
Thompson said. “I felt this would occur. It was just a matter of her
making the decision of where she wanted to go. “She
has great skills and work ethic. I believe she will be successful at
Southwest, and Southwest will be well pleased. They’re getting a steal.” Martre
just completed her 13th season at Southwest. She coached Ashley
Shields, selected out of Southwest by the Houston Comets as the eighth
overall pick in the 2007 Women’s National Basketball Association draft.
After playing a year for the Comets, Shields joined the Detroit Shock,
winning a WNBA championship ring in 2008.
