Barksdale medals at state meet
By BARRY BURLESON
Bobby Barksdale made history Saturday at the State Powerlifting Meet in Jackson.
The Holly Springs High School senior won the bronze medal (third place) in the 308-weight class.
“It’s the first time in school history we’ve medaled at state,” head coach Clifford Brown said. “We hope it inspires some more kids.”
It was a battle to the finish at the Mississippi Coliseum.
Barksdale totaled 1,510 pounds on his lifts – 585 squat, 370 bench and 555 deadlift.
The champion in the 308-weight class totaled 1,565 pounds, and the second-place finisher totaled 1,515.
“The one who finished second needed to deadlift 615 to beat Bobby and he did,” Coach Brown said.
No one else was close to the top three. The fourth-place finisher totaled 1,345 pounds.
“That’s how far the top three separated themselves,” he said.
Coach Brown said there were approximately 500 athletes competing in “The Big House.”
“It was nice,” he said. “Bobby did well and represented us well.”
