| Annual event April 17-19 By BARRY BURLESON Editor It’s April, and that means the tour of historic homes is just two weeks away. The 71st annual Pilgrimage, sponsored by the Holly Springs Garden Club, will be held Friday-Sunday, April 17-19. Activities
also include a cemetery tour, carriage rides, Civil War re-enactors,
luncheons, arts and crafts, plus the newest addition – the Pilgrimage
5K Walk/Run. The opening ceremony will be held
Friday, April 17, at 9:30 a.m. on the grounds of Montrose. Pilgrimage
queens this year are Olivia Childers and Lauren Poteet. Their escorts
are Will Thomas and Harris Gholson. Tour hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 17-18, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 19. On
the tour this year are Montrose, Frank Place, Finley Place, Walter
Place, Walter Place Estate Botanical Gardens, Polk Place, Featherston
Place and Burton Place. Hill Crest Cemetery will
be the setting for storytelling by Holly Springs’ most illustrious
characters brought back to life. Local townspeople are costumed in
dress of the day of persons they portray. The Twilight Tour is Friday at 7 p.m., and there will also be a guided tour Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. Frank
Swords’ team of Percheron draft horses will be pulling antique
carriages down Holly Springs’ historic streets and will be available on
a limited basis for rides during tour hours. Confederate
and Union Civil War re-enactors will set up on the grounds of some of
the historic homes during Pilgrimage. They will pitch tents and cook
meals like life was during the Civil War. Pilgrimage
lunches will be held at Montrose, sponsored by the Holly Springs Garden
Club (reservations only); at the First Presbyterian Church, sponsored
by the Town and Country Garden Club; and at Christ Episcopal Church,
sponsored by the Episcopal Church Women (reservations only). A
host of artisans and vendors will converge on the courthouse square for
a variety of arts and crafts. Music and live entertainment will also be
featured. Montrose Under the Moonlight, featuring
Southern barbecue and live music, will be held Saturday evening, April
18, starting at 6 p.m. Historic Holly Springs churches open for touring will include First Presbyterian, Christ Episcopal and First Methodist. The first annual Holly Springs Pilgrimage 5K Walk/Run will begin Saturday, April 18, at 9 a.m. on the courthouse square.
