| Close to Nowhere By Linda Jones No kitchen, no floors; but I still have Solitaire Tuesday
afternoon I called home to ask my son, the computer whiz, to check my
computer and his sister’s computer for that new “worm” that was
supposed to hit PCs with a vengeange on April 1. (I’m writing this on
Tuesday afternoon — I really, really hope it’s an April Fool spam...) Anyway
— back to my phone call — I asked Kris to check the computers and he
said he would as soon as he could, but he couldn’t right then — seems
like Pop and Pop’s friend Chris have torn my floors up. I thought I was prepared for this. I was supposed to be! I’ve
worked in the kitchen for a while now — taking some cabinets down,
repainting and rearranging what’s left, putting new shelves up, etc. I’m
about worn out from going up and down the stepladder. If I were six
inches taller, I could have just stretched and saved myself a good bit
of arthritic hip pain! My upper kitchen cabinets look very nice. I’m a bit concerned about the paint color I’ve picked out though. The
cabinets are “muslin” which actually means off-white. I have a border
for the walls, with veggies and baskets and stuff that also has some
lavender and purples. I matched the lavender I thought perfectly, with,
I thought, a very light lavender — kinda white-lavendery. I’ve
taken down one of my cabinets and replaced it with shelves. Before I
put the shelves up, I had to paint the wall that was going to be
exposed. The paint is not white-lavendery. It’s deep lavender! Pop just laughed at it and said he didn’t really care. However, I keep looking at it and thinking — purple? I
can’t get back to work in my kitchen until the floors are finished and
my wall is either torn down or left standing. That’s still up in the
air — Pop and I just can’t decide. One day it’s staying, the next he
says we’ll pull it down. I guess that’s just going to be a wait-and-see kitchen project. Tuesday afternoon, as I write this, I’m almost afraid to go home. Then...I remember my poor ole arthritic hips. I can play Solitaire until the floors are finished!
