| Work begins on Audubon entrance By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Motorists
traveling on Highway 311, north of Holly Springs, may soon get a shock
as they pass by Strawberry Plains Audubon Center. The
Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be clearing the
right-of-way along Highway 311 this spring, just north of Strawberry
Church, as part of a new entrance road to the nature preserve,
according to center director Bubba Hubbard. Contractors
started work last week on Audubon property for the new entrance road
and MDOT may soon begin clearing trees along both sides of Highway 311
around the new entrance once the road is in. Full Story

economic stimulus package was not only the focus of a town hall meeting
last week but also a part of the board of aldermen’s agenda. Holly
Springs is definitely receiving $285,543 through the American Recovery

The
Danny Merriweather family will be the sixth recipient of a Habitat for
Humanity house in Marshall County, according to Habitat president Greg
Taylor. The property that the house sits on was donated to Habitat for use for this home by the Joseph Ford family, he said. Habitat
For Humanity is a national organization with local chapters that help
raise funds and gather materials to reduce the cost of construction of
a house, Taylor said. The owner of this new home will pay about $50,000
for a home that will be valued at about $90,000, he said. Full Story
Police station progresses By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
renovation of the former Williams Clinic on J.M. Ash Drive into a new
police headquarters for Holly Springs is close to 80 percent complete,
according to Steve Glazer, project supervisor with CIG Contractors of
Corinth, the general contractor. Work on renovating the building began in mid-October 2008. Full Story

Hundreds pay last respects to former Rust president By ANDRE LOCKETT Special Correspondent The
W.A. McMillan Multi-Purpose Center on the Rust College campus was
almost filled to capacity as family and friends from near and far came
together to pay tribute and say last goodbyes to long-time educator and
mentor Dr. William A. McMillan Sr. Several
hundred people were in attendance Saturday, March 21 – dignitaries,
state and local officials, even dozens of men from Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity in which McMillan was a lifetime member. McMillan, 89, died Saturday, March 14, at Alliance HealthCare System Hospital following an automobile accident. Full Story
Museum renovations nearing completion By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
landmark Marshall County Historical Museum, under renovation since July
2003, will be ready for reoccupancy within weeks, according to Larry
Hall, county administrator who has overseen the stabilization and
repair of the structure built in 1904. The
historic building was constructed as the Presbyterian Synodical School
for girls at the turn of the 20th Century and has in recent times been
occupied by the Marshall County Historical Museum exclusively,
according to curator Lois Swanee-Shipp. Full Story

Stewart of Wildrose Kennels in Oxford recently made his second training
film for British and Irish labradors at Fitch Farms/Galena Plantation. The film will be produced as a DVD and sold all over the United States and in international markets, as well, he said. Full Story
