| Cards get one win in tourney By BARRY BURLESON Editor Potts Camp hosted a one-day tournament and came away with a win, a tie and a loss. The Cardinals opened the spring break event with a 6-0 victory over Ashland. Eighth grader Sawyer Goode was the winning pitcher, going the distance in the five-inning game. “He did a good job on the mound,” coach Michael Loden said. Potts
Camp’s next matchup versus Thrasher ended in a 5-5 deadlock after an
extra inning that stretched the hour and a half time limit. “We did not want to get way behind on our games,” Loden said. Starting pitcher Austin Goode struck out three in the first inning. “Then he got in a little trouble in the second,” Loden said. The
Cardinals fell behind 0-3, rallied to tie the game in the third,
trailed again at 5-3 and then scored two in the bottom of the fifth to
knot the game at 5. “We played the extra inning
and held them in the top of the sixth,” Loden said. “In the bottom of
the sixth, we had runners on first and second with no outs, but then
had a strikeout and two pop-ups.” The Cardinals dropped the tournament nightcap, 9-4 to Falkner. Loden said his pitching ace, Cody Watts, started the game but “was not himself.” “He had some trouble locating his pitches,” the coach added. Due to time limit, the game lasted just four innings. Austin Goode pitched the top of the fourth. “Falkner is a good team,” Loden said. “They hit the ball well.” It was Potts Camp’s second loss to Falkner this season. “We seem to have trouble with them,” he said. “It’s like they have our number this year. We seem to fall apart against them.” Loden said no Cardinal “stood out at the plate” during the spring break tournament. “We did do a better job of hitting with runners in scoring position, particularly against Thrasher,” he said. The
Cardinals were scheduled to visit Coldwater on Tuesday for a district
contest. They visit Blue Mountain Friday at 5 p.m., and go to Wheeler
Saturday for a noon game. Next Tuesday, March 31, Potts Camp hosts
Hickory Flat at 5 p.m.
