There’s a little race track tucked back under the hills just south of Holly Springs that may be lost on the locals, but it is not lost on racing enthusiasts. The motors can be heard under the hill and the bright lights illuminate the sky over the track, which has been under new ownership for three years. Nathan and Aileen Davis have remodeled the Holly Springs Motor Sports facility, which includes a one-eighth mile long track and 20 acres of paved parking equipped with RV plugs, according to manager Terry Forsythe. Baths and showers are also available on site. The drag strip was recently re-polished and ground for this season’s racing. Forty-one qualify for municipal elections By BARRY BURLESON The candidate lists are set for this year’s municipal elections. Qualifying deadline was Friday. The county’s largest city has the most candidates (19) who submitted qualifying papers. Four candidates are running for mayor of Holly Springs – Andre’ DeBerry, Lawrence Riddle, Patricia Selman and Barry Thomas. Burning incident leads to aggravated assault charge By SUE WATSON Paramedics and sheriff’s deputies were called to 3960 Higdon Road last week to provide medical assistance to two people with burns, according to county fire investigator Tracy Jeffries. Byhalia aldermen reduce salaries By SUE WATSON The Byhalia Board of Aldermen, during its February 17 meeting, passed motions to reduce the salaries of the mayor and aldermen effective July 1. The board also passed motions to seek an increase of $1 a month on customer’s water bills and to ask the Mississippi Legislature for a 2 percent tourism sales tax levy.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, core values, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate in applied science degree relating through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of Steve Rodgers of Austin Springs Road, Dukedom, Tenn., and grandson of Ethelene Hulsey of Mahon Station Road, Holly Springs. The airman is a 2006 graduate of Dresden High School, Tenn. City applies for COPS grant By BARRY BURLESON The economic stimulus package, the need for additional police officers and tourism talk dominated the meeting of the Holly Springs mayor and board of aldermen March 3. Don Hollingsworth, public works director, said Holly Springs would be receiving $285,543 through the American Recovery Act, funneled through the Federal Highway Administration and Mississippi Department of Transportation. Job fair attendance up this year By SUE WATSON More than 800 job seekers turned out for the annual Marshall/Benton Area Job Fair Tuesday, March 3. In the current economic slump, turnout was better than last year when about 450 people were there looking for jobs, according to Joe Buckner with Gov. Haley Barbour’s Job Fair Network. Byhalia police officers respond to accidents, medical assistance The Byhalia Police Department responded to 24 calls during the past week. Chief Gary Looney released the following report – five alarm calls, two motor vehicle accidents, two escorts, two animal-related calls, one juvenile-related call, one assist, five medical assistance calls, one fire and five miscellaneous calls. Byhalia police officers made seven arrests during the past week.
