Jason Thompson shouts instructions to his Lady Lions Saturday night. |
Byers at home in ‘Big House’ • Marshall County squad goes for two straight state titles Friday By BARRY BURLESON Editor Winning a state championship is tough. Returning to the title game the next year is tougher. “Our
name has been circled on everyone’s calendar,” said Jason Thompson,
head coach of the H.W. Byers Lady Lions. “To get back is huge for us,
and we’ll take it.” The Lady Lions will seek to
repeat as Class 2A state champions Friday afternoon in Mississippi
Coliseum at Jackson. Their opponent will be Kemper County. Full Story
• Lady Lions beat Lady Rebs in semi-finals By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor The state semi-final clash Saturday at “The Big House” was highly anticipated. The
H.W. Byers Lady Lions, defending 2A champions and number two seed from
the North, faced Scott Central, the number one seed from the South and
a former state title winner in 2000 in the 1A class. Scott
Central had also received a first round “bye” in the Mississippi High
School Activities Association/Cellular South State Basketball
Championships. Byers had advanced by beating Bay Springs on Tuesday of
last week at Mississippi Coliseum. Full Story
Behind The Scoreboard By Claude Vinson Teams jockey for position If
you are a dedicated SEC fan and have been looking to spot a few SEC
teams in the top 25 you probably will have to use a magnifying glass. SEC
participants in the elite corps, to dredge up an old phrase, are
“scarcer than hen’s teeth.” And we all know that it is
going-down-to-the-wire time. The SEC is not alone
in feeling the drought. There are other conferences facing the same
dilemma. What do the teams do to gain the nod of the tournament
selection committee if there is no national ranking hanging around the
name? From this weekend’s play, the answer is obvious – beat up on each
other. Full Story

The
Holly Springs junior high boys (seventh and eighth grades) captured the
North Mississippi Athletic Conference championship recently in the
tournament held at Byhalia Middle School. Holly Springs Intermediate
School entered the tournament as the number two seed and waited on the
winner between Galena and BMS. Galena took the victory and then Holly
Springs Intermediate and Galena met for the fourth time this season.
Holly Springs won all four games. Then the stage was set for the Hawks
to face H.W. Byers, the number one seed and the only team to beat Holly
Springs Intermediate this season. It was a tough battle from start to
finish. The score went back and forth all evening long. But in the end
the HSI Hawks came out on top by a score of 36-33. Holly Springs ended
the season with a record of 16-1 and back-to-back conference crowns.

Byers clears first hurdle at state By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor The
H.W. Byers Lady Lions began their quest for a repeat crown in “The Big
House” in an early morning game (9 a.m.) Tuesday, Feb. 24, going
against the Lady Bulldogs of Bay Springs. Two
of Byers’ cheerleaders, Dominique Mull and Olivia Cunningham, were
given the special honor of trooping the colors to open the contest. The
Lady Lions were clearly in a defensive frame of mind. They were
grabbing every rebound within sight. Although the shooting at the line
was not very consistent, the floor shooting was effective enough to
account for a 24-12 margin at the end of the first stanza. The Lady
Dawgs couldn’t put together a defensive scheme which would slow down
the Lady Lions. Full Story
