Police charge one with assault By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Mohammed
Ali Monsen, 43, of Holly Springs, was arrested Sunday following a
shooting incident at a convenience store on East Van Dorn, according to
police chief Robert Pearson. The victim of the
shooting was airlifted to a Memphis hospital, he said, and was thought
to be shoplifting by the store clerk, Monsen, and several eye witnesses. Monsen was charged with aggravated assault in connection with the incident, Pearson said. Police
officers responded to a burglary call from the 500 block of Robindale
Lane Monday, Feb. 23, Pearson said. A $50 bill and an unknown quantity
of quarters and nickels were missing from the business. Full Story

Deadline Friday for municipal candidates By BARRY BURLESON Editor The deadline for candidates to qualify for municipal elections is Friday. Each candidate must be a qualified voter and resident of the city or ward for which he or she is seeking office. Those
who had turned in their “Qualifying Statement of Intent” at Byhalia
Town Hall as of Monday morning were Phil Malone, candiate for mayor;
and Daylon Cannon, Ronny Blackburn, Mike Hamblin, Richard Minor and Joe

County offices flushing out cancer By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
Marshall County tax collector’s and tax assessor’s offices are teaming
up to help raise money for the 2009 Relay For Life fund-raising effort
for the American Cancer Society. The novel idea to leave a purple
toilet in front of businesses and charge to have it removed was taken
from an Oxford business, ENT Consultants, which is using the same theme. Full Story

Meredith first black student at Ole Miss The Reverend Andrew Cheairs and the St. Paul Baptist Church hosted the third annual Marshall County Black History Banquet. Program
planners saw this as an appropriate end to February, traditionally
called “Black History Month.” The guest speaker for the banquet was
James Meredith, the first black to attend the University of Mississippi. Full Story
Hospital requests funds from city By BARRY BURLESON Editor Representatives
of Alliance HealthCare System asked the City of Holly Springs to
contribute $100,000 annually in support of health needs of indigent
families. Cecelia Bost, spokesperson for the hospital, presented the request to city leaders during their February 17 meeting. “We don’t turn people away,” she said. “We treat them all.” She
submitted a letter to the mayor and board which was signed by W.A.
McMillan, president of the hospital board, and James Tuttle, vice chair. Full Story
Longtime officer, Purple Heart recipient dies By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Elmo
McKinney Sr., who is thought to be the first African American hired on
the Holly Springs police force, was laid to rest Monday. He
served 22 years at the police department under the late mayor Sam
Coopwood and others and under chiefs Harry Bryant and John Shaw,
according to his wife Shirley. Full Story |
