Pets try to have a Christmas feast
We at the Marshall County Humane Society hope you all had a wonderful Christmas.
Mine almost included a trip to the vet and I’m supposed to know better.
Everybody has their specialities for holidays and one of mine is mushrooms stuffed with cream cheese and grated onion, then wrapped in bacon, secured by toothpicks.
I had taken a big batch in a plastic container to my daughter’s for the big feast. When I got home I put the bowl with the few remainders on the counter, got busy with other things and forgot about it.
I have two dogs and seven cats. Not only do they get along but they help each other, especially where stealing food is concerned. (So far the five-pound roast out of the refrigerator has been their biggest score.)
Well, I turned the corner, found that one of the yellow cats had pushed the bowl off the counter onto the floor and was trying very hard to pry the lid off. My cocker spaniel, Greta, who swallows everything whole, was hovering.
Thank heaven I happened along in time, the lid hadn’t come off and disaster was averted. If Greta had wolfed the mushrooms complete with toothpicks, oh my!
There’s still more holiday to go, so watch your furry friends and don’t let them share more of the treats than you want them to. And be careful with those toothpicks.
