The H.W. Byers Lions continued their Cinderella story in the first round of Class 2A North State play. Coach
Sylvester Kilgore’s team, sporting a losing season record against some
stiff competition, advanced in tournament play with an 84-46
shellacking of Ackerman February 19. But their
magical post-season run ended Thursday when they met Ruleville in the
north quarter-finals at Baldwyn. They lost 72-59. They finished with a 14-19 season record. In
the 38-point home win over Ackerman, five Lions scored in double
digits. Leading the offensive outburst was Justin Owens with 23. Other
top point producers were Demarius Scott with 17, T.W. Bryson with 15,
Marvin Rayford with 14 and Fred Jones with 13. Byers
erupted early, going ahead 23-11 after the first quarter. The Lions
stretched the lead to 43-20 at the half and coasted from there. The quarter-final contest versus Ruleville was tight, but Ruleville slowly widened its margin and won by 13 points. Byers trailed 42-35 at the half. The Lions again enjoyed balanced scoring. Leading the way were Rayford with 15 and Owens and Bryson with 13 each. Coach Kilgore thanked Byers fans for their support during the 2007-08 season.
