Holy Family packs lots of light into week
By SUE WATSON
Holy Family School celebrated nationwide Catholic Schools Week with lots of hands-on special activities, guest speakers, good food, and art activities each day. The theme this year was “Light The Way.”
Classes used the theme in making colorful door decorations, banners and other artwork. The children also helped collect care package items for residents of the Veterans’ Home in Oxford.
Each day special focus was applied - to vocation, to patriotism, to parents, students, grandparents, careers, to art, to music and to citizenship.
The week’s celebration was capped off with a special mass led by Father Leonard Elder with St. Joseph Catholic Church.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of Catholic school in Holly Springs and 161 continuous years in Mississippi.
Principal Millie Smith remarked that Holy Family (formerly Cadet School) has been in existence longer than any other non-government-sponsored school in the state. This is Smith’s first year as headmistress at the school.
“When we work with our children here, we work with the academics to help them get as much knowledge as possible,” she said. “We also work with character education and social development of the child. But the best gift of all, we get to work on spiritual formation and that is what distinguishes us from other schools in the community. That’s why we say we minister to the whole child and family.”
Families are ministered to through Catholic Social Services.
Each week a class leads the devotional for the week.
Music was provided during the week by Orlando Parham and some of the teaching staff and students.
