H.W. Byers teams wrapped up
the regular season last week by
splitting with Independence and
sweeping district foe Mantachie. The Lady Lions, powered by
Simone Ryan’s 26-point performance,
routed Independence
Thursday night at home – 78-44. Rachel Jones followed with 10. Coach Jason Thompson’s team,
ranked second in the state by The
Clarion-Ledger newspaper, took
control early. The Lady Lions led 18-
5 after one quarter. It was 43-19 at
the half and they outscored the visitors
24-9 in the third period. Four Lions scored in double digits
but it wasn’t enough to overcome
Independence. They lost 58-52. Demarius Scott was the leading
point producer for coach Sylvester
Kilgore’s crew. He scored 15. Other
top scorers were Fred Jones with
12, Marvin Rayford with 11 and
Justin Owens with 10. Byers trailed 29-19 at the half.
Coach Thompson said his Byers
girls “tuned up for the playoffs” with
a 99-41 blowout of Mantachie
Friday night on the road. The Lady Lions dominated from
the start – 20-9 after one quarter, 48-
22 at the half and 76-29 after three
periods.
Rachel Jones was on fire. She
scored 31 points. Close behind was
Amanda Jones with 23. Others in
double figures were Ryan and Ciara
Seldon with 14 each. Byers finished the regular season
at 26-4 overall and 5-1 in Region
1-2A. Coach Kilgore’s Lions coasted to
a win at Mantachie, too. They blistered
the Mustangs 74-50. It was close at the half. Byers led
32-30. But the Lions outscored the
home team 42-20 in the second half. Five Lions scored in double digits
– Rayford with 13, Owens with
12, T.W. Bryson with 12, Scott with
12 and Jones with 11. Byers improved to 10-18 overall
and 4-2 in Region 1-2A. Schedule Byers is hosting the Region 1-2A
Tournament this week. A schedule

section. The Lady Lions are seeded
second and the Lions third.
