Close to Nowhere By Linda Jones
Happy 90th Mrs. Dale
Wednesday, December 16, Dale Hollingsworth of Potts Camp celebrated her
90th birthday.
At 90, Dale is still writing the Potts Camp News for The South Reporter
— just like she’s done for the past 26 years.
The South Reporter hosted the party, which was held at the Potts Camp
School lunchroom. Dale worked in that same lunchroom, many years ago.
All her children graduated from Potts Camp School also.
Leigh Anne Sanderson, principal at Potts Camp School, was very gracious
in allowing us the use of the school. Margie Green, food manager of the
Marshall County Board of Education, offered us anything we needed and
Edna Goode, lunchroom manager, was gracious and very helpful. We were
very appreciative of the willingness of everyone involved to help us
celebrate Dale’s 90th birthday “in style!”
At the party, it was fascinating to meet so many people that I feel
like I actually know — I’ve read about them for more than 20 years in
Dale’s column.
Betty Greer, Dale’s daughter, did a great deal for the reception also;
bringing the finger foods, plates and cutlery.
She and an in-law Teresa, along with several other members of the
family, and family friends, worked very, very hard to make the party a
festive occasion — and they succeeded!
The party would not have come off nearly as well as it did though,
without Mary Minor. Mary, the very efficient office assistant at the
MSU Extension office, kept all of us on track and moving forward. She
remembered everything we needed to do and did quite a bit of that
herself.
Mary does a lot for us here at The South Reporter. We really, really
appreciate her!
The party itself was wonderful. The Potts Camp Bank sent beautiful
flowers, Mary’s sister baked a beautiful cake, the poinsettias were
gorgeous and the lunchroom rollicked with merriment.
Barry, the editor, kicked off the party with praise for Dale and
laughter at the Monday morning phone calls with “one more thing” to add
to her news.
Jimmie Collins, mayor of Potts Camp and longtime close friend of Dale,
presented her the key to the city, along with emotional remarks, and
Dale offered some thoughts as well — assuring everyone present that
she loved us all.
Mary Minor and I took many, many pictures. Some of them will grace the
pages of The South Reporter soon.
And, we’re hoping that Dale herself will provide some interesting
tidbits from her party in her next column. She will certainly remember
everyone who came and helped make the day a memorable one for her!
