| Congressman hosting Economic Stimulus Forum • Childers prepares local projects for possible funding through upcoming stimulus package Congressman
Travis Childers will host an Economic Stimulus Forum Thursday, Dec. 18,
to brief local leaders on potential funding for North Mississippi
projects from the economic stimulus package that Congress is expected
to pass in early January. The congressman is
extending an open invitation to project coordinators, local officials
and economic development professionals from across Mississippi’s First
District, as well as representatives from local, state and federal
agencies that are likely to play a role in administrating stimulus
funds. “It is all but certain that there will
be a major economic stimulus package passed as soon as the new Congress
convenes in January,” said Congressman Childers. “Next
year’s stimulus package is going to be one of the largest efforts to
jumpstart our nation’s economy in recent history. There are a number of
projects already underway or just waiting to begin in North
Mississippi, and many of them meet the objectives of the planned
stimulus package. It is important that these projects are geared up and
ready to go. Thursday’s forum is an effort to provide project
coordinators and state and local leaders with as much information as
possible so that North Mississippi can get its fair share of stimulus
funds.” A consensus is already emerging on
certain aspects of the stimulus package. Most notably, federal stimulus
funding is likely to be targeted to projects that are either already in
progress or have the ability to commence immediately. The plan is also
likely to target projects that build or expand critical infrastructure
for transportation, energy, technology, health, education, and the
environment. The goal of the upcoming stimulus plan is to jumpstart
the nation’s economy by putting as many people to work as quickly as
possible while upgrading the nation’s critical infrastructure. Local officials and representatives of projects meeting the above criteria are encouraged to attend by RSVPing at 662-844-5437. Congressman
Childers will host the Economic Stimulus Forum in the BancorpSouth
Conference Center Poplar Room, 387 E Main St., Tupelo, from 1:30-3
p.m., Thursday, December 18.
