| Byers girls 15-0, knock off 5A Clinton By BARRY BURLESON Editor Class 2A’s top team stepped up three classifications Saturday and lifted its unbeaten mark to 15-0. The fearless H.W. Byers Lady Lions knocked off 5A Clinton 57-54 in the Lafayette County Coach Crouther Classic. “That
win spoke volumes about our level of play,” coach Jason Thompson said
about his defending state champs. “If we keep working hard, the sky’s
the limit.” Byers led 22-16 after one quarter and 34-26 at halftime. The advantage was 42-36 after three. Thompson said Clinton was a “very sound team with two solid guards.” He
said a huge key in the win was the defense of Kenyatta Gulledge and
Amanda Jones. Meanwhile, Rachel Jones and Kourtney Coleman provided the
bulk of the offensive production - scoring 25 and 13 points,
respectively. Amanda Jones added 10. “Down the
stretch, Rachel showed why she is a ‘Dandy Dozen’ player,” Thompson
said. “They tried to take the ball out of her hands and rough her up.
But she hit nine straight free throws and was the player of the game.” Just
one day earlier, the Lady Lions passed another huge test. They went on
the road and knocked off Class 3A Tunica Rosa Fort 55-47. “That’s a team we’ve had little success against the last five years,” Thompson said. Coleman came up huge in the middle, Thompson said. She scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Others scoring in double digits were Rachel Jones with 14 and Amanda Jones and Alexis Hardaway with 10 each. Byers wa up 29-19 at the half. “Our young players are maturing,” Thompson said, “and we will need them big-time when January and February roll around.” H.W. Byers boys Coach
Sylvester Kilgore’s Lions got 25 points from Fred Jones Saturday in the
Coach Crouther Classic but it wasn’t enough. They fell 61-53 to Calhoun
City. Twenty-two of Jones’ points came in the first half. He also had nine rebounds in the contest. The third quarter proved to be the Lions’ downfall. They were outscored 21-6 in the period. Carlos Martin added 11 for Byers. The Lions lost 75-47 Friday night at Tunica Rosa Fort. Top scorers for Byers were Martin with 11 and Tedarian Bryson with 10. Bryson also had 16 rebounds and two blocks. Byers teams next play Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 29-30, in the Northwest Ranger Classic at Northwest Community College.
