Top girls teams Byers-Belmont to meet Friday

A
long-anticipated clash between two of the area’s best girls basketball
teams arrives Friday night.
H.W.
Byers hosts Belmont in a Class 2A matchup with the top seed in the
Division Tournament on the line. Both are unbeaten in district.
The
Lady Lions, 23-3 overall, have not played since a Tuesday night, Jan.
22, win at Independence.
“We’re
getting some time off, and that’s the way I wanted it,” said head coach
Jason Thompson. “There will be a lot of scouting, a lot of resting and
a lot of game-planning to try and get ready for them.”
The
Lady Lions are ranked fourth in the area (all classifications) by the
Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal. The Lady Cardinals are sixth.
Byers
vs. Independence
Ciara
Seldon’s 22-point night, including five threes, highlighted the Lady
Lions’ 77-51 win over Independence.
Others
in double digits were Simone Ryan with 18 and Rachel Jones with 16.
The
two teams were tied at 15 after one quarter and then Byers outscored
the home team 27-7 in the second period.
“We
played even ball with them in the first quarter, then we made some
adjustments defensively and got into a better rhythm offensively,”
Thompson said. “We outscored them by 20 in the second quarter. After
that it never got under 20.”
He
said he was able
to try some different rotations and “work on some things” offensively
and defensively after getting the big lead.
The
H.W. Byers boys dropped a 79-64 decision at Class 3A Independence.
They
trailed 19-11 after one quarter, 32-22 at halftime and 52-35 after
three.
Marvin
Rayford poured in a game-high 29 points for the Lions, who saw their
record fall to 8-16. Justin Owens added 18 points.
Eleven
players scored for Independence, led by Tremaine Green’s 17 points.
Schedule
After
hosting Belmont Friday evening, the Lions and Lady Lions host Class 5A
Southaven Saturday and then travel to Mantachie next Tuesday, Feb. 5,
to wrap up regular season division play.
