Christmas parade Saturday; lighting contest scheduled

Two highlights of the Christmas season in Holly Springs are the annual Christmas Parade and the Holiday Lighting Contest.

In keeping with tradition, the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce will host the 19th annual Christmas Parade on December 6, and judge the lighting contest on December 19. The parade will begin at 5 p.m. this Saturday. Application forms for both are available at the chamber office, 104 E. Gholson, or call 662-252-2943.

Tree lighting Friday night; other Byhalia activities set

Byhalia’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting program and arrival of Santa will be Friday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m. at the Byhalia Fire Department, Hwy. 309 and College Street.

Entertaining prior to the arrival of Santa and the lighting of the tree will be children from Friendship Christian Academy and local childcare centers in the area. The Byhalia Cub Scouts will also be on hand with their handmade Christmas ornaments to place them on the tree.

A fund-raising chili supper will follow, sponsored by the Byhalia Volunteer Fire Department. Photos of children with Santa will also be available and each child will receive a coloring book and Christmas goodie from Santa.

Sponsored by the Byhalia Area Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Byhalia, the public is invited to join the celebration of the season.

“Light Up the Town,” sponsored by the Byhalia Garden Club, is set for December 14-19. The lighting competition is for residential and commercial properties. Cash prizes will go to the winners in the following categories - best overall, most original and best window and/or door.

The Byhalia Lions Club is sponsoring the Clydesdale Christmas Auction to benefit the Clydesdale Christmas Store. The auction will be held Friday, Dec. 19, at the Southern Corner, downtown Byhalia, from 7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 each at the door. Call Kevin Hughes, 901-487-7061, to donate items.

Government offices release holiday closing schedules

Marshall County offices along with its municipalities (Potts Camp, Holly Springs and Byhalia) announce holiday closings.

County and city government offices will be closed Thursday and Friday, Dec. 25-26, for Christmas holidays; and Thursday and Friday, Jan. 1-2, 2009, for New Year’s holidays.
