MA snatches wins in neighboring state By BARRY BURLESON Friday’s long road trip to Arkansas proved to be well worth the ride for the Marshall Academy Lady Patriots and Patriots. The MA girls trailed by 10 points in the fourth quarter and rallied to beat Marvell. The MA boys turned a two-point halftime lead into a 29-point win. Traci Rodgers nailed a three-pointer with 16 seconds left to give the Lady Patriots their first lead. Emily Burk added two free throws with seven ticks to go, and Marshall shocked the Lady Eagles 41-38. Byers girls, Hawks get wins By CLAUDE VINSON The start was a bit slow for both teams in this intra-county matchup which always draws a large contingent of fans from both sides. The host Lady Hawks got the tip in the November 20 contest, but the Lady Lions got the first basket on a stick-back by Symone Gorman. Points were not falling that easy, but Byers was winning the rebounding war. Benton-Marshall rivalry By CLAUDE VINSON A Benton-Marshall rivalry which dates back many years was renewed for the 2008-09 basketball season. Whenever teams from across the county lines meet, you can bet that there will be a contest. Lady Cards go to 6-5 By BARRY BURLESON A strong first quarter lifted the Potts Camp girls to a win at Mooreville Friday night, while the boys had some shooting and rebounding woes in their loss. Coach Tana Miller’s Lady Cardinals exploded for a 24-7 first-quarter lead over the Lady Troopers and went on to take a 76-58 victory. Lady Lions stay unbeaten; await Bi-County Tournament The H.W. Byers Lady Lions improved to 10-0 at the holiday break with a 94-36 blowout of Independence Friday at home. Four Byers girls scored in double figures – Amanda Jones with 17, Symone Gorman with 12, Rachel Jones with 11 and Brionne Gulledge with 10. |
