Lady Lions knock off 4A Oxford By BARRY BURLESON The defending Class 2A state champions sent notice Thursday night that they’re back and perhaps better than before. Coach Jason Thompson’s H.W. Byers Lady Lions stunned Class 4A Oxford 75-52 on the Lady Chargers’ home floor. Oxford entered the game ranked number eight in The Clarion-Ledger’s “Super 10.” Potts Camp gets wins at Falkner By BARRY BURLESON Coaches Brian Smith and Tana Miller liked the teamwork of their Potts Camp basketball squads Friday night on the road. And a couple of individual scoring efforts stood out, too. The Cardinals downed Falkner 75-61, and the Lady Cardinals won 83-46. Marshall teams sweep West Memphis Christian By BARRY BURLESON District play is just around the corner, and coach Craig Dailey sees his Marshall Academy Lady Patriots and Patriots making positive strides. The MA teams swept West Memphis Christian Saturday at home. After both teams struggled a bit in the first quarter, the Lady Patriots caught fire and built a 28-9 halftime lead on their way to a 51-25 win over the Lady Knights. Behind The Scoreboard Mighty Titans Years from now when posterity questions you about where you were and what you were doing during week 11 of the 2008 NFL season, how will you answer? Probably a good bet would be that you would reply, “Well, while waiting for the television world to go from analog to digital (and cussing those responsible), I was engaged in watching diligently to see if the Tennessee Titans would remain undefeated and whether the Cowboys would beat the Redskins.” Holly High falls to 5A schools By CLAUDE VINSON The Hawks and Lady Hawks each had 2-1 records coming off the tournament at Coldwater when they welcomed 5A Horn Lake to the Hawks’ aerie on Veterans Day. Oddly enough, both Eagles teams were also 2-1. The Lady Hawks didn’t put up a point until the last three minutes of the first quarter. However, with a trip to the charity stripe and a trey from Katrina Cowan, the Lady Hawks walked to within two points at 12-10. Catria Whaley blasted another three from the left corner and Cowan made it 16-15 at the line just seconds before the frame ended. Byhalia teams drop two at Coldwater By BARRY BURLESON Mistakes and shooting woes dealt the Byhalia boys their first loss of the season Friday night. Coach Michael Neal’s Indians couldn’t convert in the closing seconds and fell 53-52 at Coldwater. Their record went to 3-1. “We had the opportunity to win it,” he said. Mt. Pleasant takes trophies The Mt. Pleasant Lions youth football and cheerleading team came away with first- and second-place trophies after the championship games held this past Saturday, Nov. 15. Despite a few sprinkles and in what some would call perfect football weather, both squads battled to gain the status of number 1 for the 2008 season. The peewee squad lost a heartbreaker in overtime to the Water Valley Titans. However, the bantam squad won by a landslide against the Greenville Red Hornets, taking the top spot as the champions for its division of the Mississippi Youth Football and Cheer League. The cheerleaders along with fans and supporters kept the teams encouraged as they held the competition scoreless. The Mt. Pleasant Lions would like to give special thanks once again to Mayor Andre DeBerry and Kenneth McMullen, director of the City of Holly Springs Parks and Recreation Department, for their hospitality and use of Sam Coopwood Park for the day. It was a beautiful day. It is not too late to become a sponsor for the 2008-09 season. Hannah, a junior, scored a team-high 13 points Sunday when the Shockers opened their season with a 77-53 win over Florida A&M. He also dished out five assists. Byhalia High School lights fields On the sixth of November, an evening which inclement threatened off and on, head coach Bubba Brown held the ceremonial lighting of the Byhalia Indian baseball facility. The entire sports complex is comprised of the gridiron, baseball and softball facilities. |
