| Holly High goes 2-1 in tourney By BARRY BURLESON Editor Holly Springs basketball teams tipped off the season last week with 2-1 marks. The Hawks and Lady Hawks competed in the Coldwater Tournament. Coach Naylond Hayes’ Hawks opened Wednesday with a 58-50 win over the host school. Holly High built a 27-17 halftime advantage. Tavarus Hardy was the team’s top point producer with 17. Marcus McKinney added 11, and Johnathan Bownes had eight. The Hawks’ had an easier win Thursday evening. They outscored Independence 45-14 in the second half and won 82-48. Four Holly High players scored in double figures – Darius Dowdy with 17, Hardy with 15, Bownes with 12 and Javion Agnew with 10. The Hawks then wrapped up the tournament Saturday with a hard-fought 62-58 loss to Tunica Rosa Fort. Holly High let a 31-23 halftime lead slip away. Timothy Oliver gunned in 16 points, followed by Kentona Shipp with 13 and Bownes with 10. The Holly High girls began play in the Coldwater Tournament with a 55-48 win over the host school. JaShanta Walker tossed in 20 points to lead the offense. Tamekico Johnson and Katia Isom added 14 and 11, respectively. The Lady Hawks were up 26-20 at the half. Coach Wilbert Beard’s team knocked off Independence 71-58 Thursday night before losing 55-29 to Tunica Rosa Fort Saturday. Walker poured in 29 in the win over Independence. Isom had 13 and Katrina Cowan 11. Against Tunica, Johnson was the top scorer with 11; Isom added eight. Holly High teams hosted Horn Lake Tuesday. They visit Olive Branch Thursday.
