Byers takes two from Potts Camp
By BARRY BURLESON
Marshall Countians Rachel Jones and Kenyotta Jenkins have faced each other on the basketball court many times, but never as fellow members of the state’s “Dandy Dozen.”
The H.W. Byers Lady Lions and Potts Camp Lady Cardinals collided once again Thursday night, one day after The Clarion-Ledger had released their annual list of the state’s best high school girls basketball players. Jones, a senior, and Jenkins, a junior, are a part of the prestigious list.
On this night, it was Jones and her teammates who pulled away in the second half for a 79-52 road win. Byers improved to 3-0 and Potts Camp went to 2-4.
The Class A Lady Cardinals trailed the Lady Lions, defending Class 2A state champs, 20-15 after one quarter. Byers’ lead was 35-23 at the half.
“They played us tough,” said Jason Thompson, head coach of the Lady Lions. “We pulled away in the second half.”
Hitting in double digits for Byers were Amanda Jones with 26, Rachel Jones with 19 and Symone Gorman with 17.
Jenkins poured in 22 for Potts Camp. Queen Dean added 14.
The boys’ clash between the two schools also went to Byers. The Lions built a 39-23 halftime advantage en route to an easy 90-53 win. They upped their early season mark to 3-0.
Five Lions led a balanced scoring attack - Marcus Rayford with 20, Mitchell Wilson with 15, T.W. Bryson with 13, Fred Jones with 12 and Jarvis Ware with 10.
Top scorers for the Cardinals, whose record went to 2-5, were Allen Robinson with 15, Jeremy Siggers with 13 and Johnathan Falkner with 12.
Byers vs. Ashland
The Lady Lions and Lions swept Ashland at home on Tuesday of last week.
Amanda Jones had the hot hand on this night, too, scoring a game-high 23 points as the Byers girls dominated 91-29.
Rachel Jones added 16 and Gorman 13.
Leading Ashland was Kiana Jones with 11.
The Byers boys outscored Ashland 23-13 in the second quarter and went on the 70-52 victory.
Ware gunned in 18 points to lead the offense. Others in double digits were Demarius Scott with 12, Bryson with 11 and Jesse Wilson with 10.
Top point men for the Devils were Dabius Dukes with 15 and Jeremy Williams with 14.
Potts Camp vs. Myrtle
The short bus ride to Union County neighbor Myrtle on Tuesday of last week wasn’t much fun for Potts Camp teams.
The Lady Cardinals fell 84-54.
“We stayed with them about a quarter and a half,” said coach Tana Miller. “Kenyotta (Jenkins) got two fouls pretty early. Myrtle is a very good team, with inside and outside scoring.”
Jenkins had 23 points. Nieshia Stinson had 10.
The Cardinals lost 99-73.
Korbin Smith led Potts Camp with 21 points, while Falkner scored 16 and Robinson 11.
The Lady Lions played at Marshall Academy Saturday (see story elsewhere in sports section). Byers teams visited Byhalia Tuesday and then host Byhalia next Tuesday, Nov. 11. The Lady Lions play in the West Union Shootout Saturday.
Potts Camp teams hosted Hickory Flat Tuesday. They host Byhalia Friday night. The girls play in the West Union Shootout Saturday. Next Tuesday, Nov. 11, Potts Camp teams host Lake Cormorant.
