Fun weekend at Kudzu Fest By SUE WATSON Despite a sagging economy worldwide and rainy overcast skies part of last week, the 20th annual Kudzu Festival was a happy event. Sponsored by the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce, executive director Amy Heaton said the festival exceeded expectations, due to the generosity of local business sponsors and volunteers, barbecue teams, arts and crafts vendors, entertainers, a 5-K run and Happee Days Carnival, which all attracted visitors to downtown. City proceeds with plans for Chalmers By BARRY BURLESON The City of Holly Springs is sending a couple of possible floor plans for renovation of the Chalmers Institute to the Department of Archives and History for review. The final choice and approval will be in the hands of the mayor and board of aldermen. Representatives of IMS Engineers visited with city leaders last week to present status reports on both the Chalmers Institute renovation and rehabilitation and the planned Hill Crest Cemetery mapping and information management systems. Store robbed of cash By SUE WATSON The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department is seeking a suspect who held up Lake Center Grocery late Monday afternoon, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson. The sheriff’s office responded to a 911 call of armed robbery at the grocery around 6 p.m. Deputies saturated the area while the DeSoto County air unit sent a search helicopter to help look for the suspect, who left the scene on foot after taking about $1,000 in cash and checks he demanded at gunpoint from the clerk, Dickerson said. Youth council focuses on government, community By BARRY BURLESON Holly Springs Mayor Andre’ DeBerry welcomed a new mayor to city hall Thursday. The first mayor’s youth council in DeBerry’s administration is up and running, thanks to a program coordinated by director Sharon White and the Latter Rain Church. William Payne was named mayor, based on his GPA, to represent the fifth through eighth graders and last week he helped DeBerry pass out membership cards in the youth council. Election arrives Tuesday By BARRY BURLESON Marshall County voters, like those across the country, will be going to the polls next week. Election Day is next Tuesday, Nov. 4. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. County schools evaluate scores By BARRY BURLESON The state tests got tougher and for the most part students in the Marshall County School District were up to the challenge. Mississippi’s old assessment system ranked 43rd in level of difficulty. The new Mississippi Curriculum Tests and Subject Area Tests have upped that level of difficulty to 12th nationally. Local clinic offers flu shots at polling places On Election Day 2008, those going to two polling places in Holly Springs will find that they can do more than vote – they also can get a flu shot. Alliance Charitable Foundation is sponsoring Williams Medical Clinic’s participation in a nationwide pilot program to help improve the health of all Americans. Sample Ballot
Byhalia officers go to 28 calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 23 calls during the past week. Chief Gary Looney released the following report – one alarm call, two motor vehicle accidents, two disturbances, one escort, two animal-related calls, two assists, two fires, 10 miscellaneous calls and one report of damaged property. Tourism industry switches emphasis By SUE WATSON With tourism down due to economic downswings the last few years, more people are choosing to see what’s going on close at home, according to Stephanie Movre, executive director of the Holly Springs Tourism Bureau. |
