championship trophy. The Patriots were honored prior to the varsity
game Friday night. |
The Marshall Academy junior high football team wrapped up a perfect season last week. The
Patriots visited district foe Indianola and clobbered the Colonels 38-6
to end the year with a 7-0 record. They won the district championship
with a 5-0 mark. “This is a great group of kids,
and they’ve worked extremely hard,” said coach Keith Owens. “They play
with a lot of heart, and they’re very aggressive on the field, which is
the way I like for them to play. This was a total team effort. “I
hope they continue to move up (to the varsity level) and bring home a
state championship. That’s my job – to make them better for Coach
(Keith) Wicker.” The MA offense was in business
early Thursday due to Indianola’s bad snap from punt formation. The
Patriots had a first and goal at the 3-yard line. Neil Murphy scored from there, and Chase Ferrell threw to Tyler Cook for the two-point conversion. The
Colonels’ only points of the night followed. Trey Robinson returned the
kickoff 83 yards for the touchdown. A try-for-two failed. The
Patriots scored two more times in the first quarter to take command.
Trey Johnson plunged into the end zone from 3 yards out, and Murphy ran
for the two-point conversion. A few minutes later Ferrell dash 73 yards for another Marshall touchdown. Johnson added the two-point conversion. MA led 24-6 after one period. Ferrell’s 83-yard run in the second quarter and Murphy’s carry for two upped the Patriots’ advantage to 32-6 at the half. The only second-half points came on Johnson’s 85-yard run, followed by Lafever run for the two-point conversion. Marshall had 330 yards total offense. Ferrell carried just four times for 185 yards. Top tacklers for the Patriots were Dustin Allen with nine, and Cook and Lafever with eight each. The
Marshall Academy junior high football team never trailed in a game this
season, and the first team defense gave up only one touchdown all year. Seventh-eighth team The
MA seventh and eighth graders only will go to Byhalia this Thursday
night to face coach C.B. McClatchy’s Indians. The game will begin at 7
p.m.
