SocietyCity Personals We are Marshall...we are champions Nancy Lane has been at her home in Waterford for several weeks. David and Robin Hampe came with Nancy and flew back to their home in Frisco, Texas, they all went to Ole Miss to see the tree Dr. and Mrs. David Hampe had given in memory of Robin’s dad, Robert L. Lane. He graduated from Ole Miss in 1964. The tree sits in front of The Inn at Ole Miss. A plaque is being placed by the tree. History was made on the softball field Saturday on the beautiful campus of Mississippi College in Clinton. The Marshall Academy Lady Patriots softball team won their game Wednesday against Presbyterian Christian School, 5-0, which gave them the opportunity to play in the rounds on Saturday. A caravan of headlights pulled out of Holly Springs before dawn, heading south. Before long, dawn had broken and the line was heading down the Natchez Trace. When the team arrived, PCS was battling Bayou Academy to scrape out of the loser’s bracket. Next up, the Lady Patriots of Marshall Academy faced the Patriots of Madison Ridgeland Academy (MRA) who, by the way, were favored to win the whole shebang. The Lady Patriots struggled at first as MRA was tough on their game. The resonating cheer “MRA! MRA!” was ringing deep on the Patriot parents who responded with, “We are...MARSHALL!” By the end of the game, the MRA side was so quiet, you could hear a pin drop. The Marshall side was so loud, it was stopping traffic on the nearby street. Mallary Covington, third baseman, caught an in-field pop fly, for the third out and win. We made it! We’re going to the finals! Victory came to the Lady Patriots who showed their fans, and themselves, why they were there there in the first place - to win it. PCS and MRA matched up after the Marshall win of 5-4 over MRA. PCS came out tough and put down MRA, knocking them out of the tournament and taking home third. The Lady Patriots had a hard battle with PCS for the championship. Something happened and Marshall wound up with the short end of the stick. At the end of that game, PCS had won it with a score of 2-4. Since The Lady Patriots were undefeated in the tournament; they had one last chance to pull off the championship. Praying hard the girls had enough gas to cross the finish line ahead, they started their last and final game. Parents and fans alike were up on their feet surrounding the field yelling, clapping and ringing their cowbells. Marshall came out swinging, hitting almost everything that came across the plate. Finally - they got the rally going. Round and round the bases and crossing home plate. Ah, it was a glorious feeling! During batting switch-ups, the Patriot fans were singing and dancing to “the oldies,” which really was just music from the ’80s. The girls even got into the mix, shaking it on the mound! At one point, seniors Heather Tomlinson and Traci Rodgers had their own little dance they performed on the sidelines by the dugout. PCS could not rally against the mighty defense and offense that the Lady Patriots were playing. Coming up empty, PCS took second place home with a 10-3 loss to the proud Marshall Academy Lady Patriots. Marshall Academy has had a slight dry spell, with no team bringing home an Overall Championship since 1971. Sat-urday night, the Lady Patriots broke that streak. They pulled out all the stops. There was barely a dry eye in the crowd as the last out of the championship game was with a grounder to pitcher, Lauren Alexander, who made the easy throw to first baseman, Chelsey Gilliam. Sunday, faces of Patriot fans hurt from all the smiling, talking sounded more like barking from all the screaming, and bodies of the players were aching from a long, hard day of softball. The girls left Holly Springs Saturday State AA Champions (second time running which is also a school record) and returned Overall Champions, which has never happened to an all girls team from Marshall Academy. The Lady Patriots are legends. They have made school history. This will be a season none of these girls, or their loyal fans, will ever forget. Collectively, they made history one run at a time. Once again, your Marshall Academy Lady Patriots are Lauren Alexander (Meat, Sumo), Heather Tomlinson (HT), Traci Rodgers (T-Rod, TR), Courtney Gibson (Pookie), Casey Gibson (Beast), Anna Roberts, Mallary Covington (Country, Bubba), Chelsey Gilliam (Mookie), Robin Bryant, Elizabeth Skelton (Red), Caitlyn Brooks, Maura Jane Autry (MJ), Lane Cunningham, bat girl Darcie Gibson, and coaches, Susan Rodgers and Carlton Gibson. This one’s for you, girls... “Well, beat the drum and hold the phone - the sun came out today! We’re born again, there’s new grass on the field. A-roundin’ third, and headed for home, it’s a brown-eyed handsome man; Anyone can understand the way I feel. Oh, put me in, Coach - I’m ready to play today; Put me in, Coach - I'm ready to play today; Look at me, I can be centerfield. Well, I spent some time in the Mudville Nine, watchin’ it from the bench; You know I took some lumps when the Mighty Casey struck out. So Say Hey Willie, tell Ty Cobb and Joe DiMaggio; Don’t say “it ain’t so.” you know the time is now. Oh, put me in, Coach - I’m ready to play today; Put me in, Coach - I’m ready to play today; Look at me, I can be centerfield. Yeah! I got it, I got it! Got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat, and brand-new pair of shoes; You know I think it’s time to give this game a ride. Just to hit the ball and touch ’em all - a moment in the sun; (pop) It’s gone and you can tell that one goodbye!” — John Fogerty (To put your news in City Personals, please e-mail maryclayb@yahoo.com; mail to City Personals, The South Reporter, P.O.
