schools can begin the basketball season October 13. And that’s when
Potts Camp and Ingomar will tip things off. The Cardinals will host the Falcons with the girls game getting things started at 6 p.m. Monday. Coach
Tana Miller starts her second season at the helm of the Lady Cardinals,
and she has three starters returning from last season’s 15-15 team.
Back are leading scorer Kenyotta Jenkins, a junior who has already
committed to Ole Miss; junior Samantha Stinson and senior Queen Dean. “Practice is going well,” Coach Miller said. “The girls are working hard and committed. We’re excited about the season.” The
district race will be “interesting,” Miller said, with defending Class
1A champion Coldwater leading the pack. It also includes West Union,
Myrtle, Ashland, Strayhorn and Hickory Flat. Coach
Brian Smith said his goal is “trying to get the program re-established”
after the Potts Camp boys finished 11-17 last season. Three
seniors will play a key role – Korbin Smith, Jeremy Siggers and Chad
Randolph. He will also be relying heavily on juniors Johnathan Falkner,
Terry Craine and Corey Totten. Coach Smith is also expecting big
contributions from sophomores Javaughn Jones, Kelvin Davis and Allen
Robinson. “We will try to play more people and
pick up the pressure defense a lot more,” said Smith, beginning his
third season. “We can go eight to 10 deep. Offensively, we will still
be up-tempo and push the ball.” He said he expects his Cardinals to contend in the tough district race. “It’s wide open,” he said. Potts Camp will host a round-robin tournament October 16-18.
