The
Marshall Academy Lady Patriots captured their third straight District
1-AA championship last weekend by defeating rival Indianola Academy. While
competing in the Carroll Tournament, the Lady Patriots used a pool game
to play a make-up game (originally rained out) versus the Lady Colonels. Lauren Alexander got the 5-2 win on the mound. Alexander put up seven strikeouts while allowing only three hits. Offensively,
Heather Tomlinson’s double to the fence and Anna Roberts’ run-batted-in
put the Patriots on the board early in the second inning. Some key hits
by Robin Bryant, Alexander and Courtney Gibson put runners in scoring
position and a stand-up double by Traci Rodgers brought in three runs
for the Lady Patriots. A sac fly by Tomlinson brought in Rodgers for
the Lady Patriots’ fifth run of the game. Coach Susan Rodgers said the Lady Pats played good, steady defense behind the pitcher, Alexander. In
the second pool game of the Saturday tournament, the Lady Patriots
faced the Lady Waves of North Delta. Some hard hitting and several
North Delta errors put Marshall on the board in the top of the first,
4-0. The Lady Pats went on to score one in the third and three more in
the fourth to get the 8-3 win. Tomlinson led
the way for Marshall with a single and a three-RBI double. Casey
Gibson, Alexander, Rodgers and Bryant each contributed a hit in the win. In the final game of the day, the Lady Patriots soundly defeated the Lady Stars from Winona Christian 14-2. Casey
Gibson got the win on the mound for MA, gathering six strikeouts and
giving up only one hit. Mallory Covington also pitched and collected
three strikeouts and allowed one hit in one inning of work. Again,
Tomlinson led the team with two hits. Alexander, Courtney Gibson,
Rodgers, Roberts and Bryant contributed to the cause with hits as well. The
defending state champions (21-4 overall and 10-0 in district) will head
to Kirk Academy in Grenada this week to play in the North AAA
Tournament Wednesday and Saturday.
