The Marshall Academy junior high football team scored via the pass, the run and the punt return Thursday night. And the defense was up to the task, too. The Patriots, playing at home, blanked Carroll Academy 20-0 and improved to 3-0 on the season. Davis Kelly blocked a punt and put MA in good scoring position in the first quarter. Chase Ferrell threw to Tyler Cook for the 6-yard score with 4:31 to go in the first quarter. The try-for-two failed. Aaron McAlexander picked off a pass early in the second quarter. But Carroll answered, intercepting Marshall’s halfback pass with 2:31 left in the first half. Then
the Patriot defense forced the Rebels to punt from the back of their
own end zone. McAlexander returned the punt 27 yards for a touchdown.
Neil Murphy ran for the two-point conversion, and Marshall was up 14-0
at the half. MA lost a couple of fumbles to start
the second half and early in the fourth quarter reached the Carroll 5
before being intercepted in the end zone. Elgin Lafever also had an interception for the Patriots in the second half. Marshall
padded its lead on its last possession of the game. Ferrell did most of
the work on the drive, included a 14-yard carry for the score. The
try-for-two was unsuccessful. The Patriots, led by head coach Keith Owens, will host Lee Academy (of Marianna, Ark.) this Thursday night, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m.
