OpinionFielder’s Choice Tiny birds One Holly Springs restaurant owner said a hummingbird celebration every weekend would be nice. That’s impossible, of course, and the businessperson knows that. The restaurant owner was simply expressing appreciation to the good folks at Strawberry Plains and their long list of volunteers who help make the three-day event happen. The Hummingbird Migration Celebration just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Close to Nowhere Giving her roses After our quilt guild meeting Saturday, Jane and I went by the hospital in Oxford to visit a much-loved, former pastor. Pat Elmore first came to Free Springs UMC during a time when a pastor had abruptly left and a former, much-loved pastor came to fill in and then retired again. We were Pat’s first church and we were also in turmoil and as sometimes happens, it was a rocky start. But time passes and congregations wise up. Pat began serving the Red Banks-Victoria Charge and the three church congregations referred to ourselves as “sister” churches -- with the congregations visiting back and forth for special occasions. Several of my favorite recipes come from some of the meals our congregation has shared with the Red Banks/Victoria churches. The Preacher’s Corner Move forward a row for a new friend Last week as I wrote about welcoming visitors and the natural anxiety people feel about visiting a new place, the corollary question of “where to sit” came to mind. All religious folk that I know understand that people typically sit in the same places in church, so when you are new or visiting, a thoughtful visitor does not wish to sit in someone’s spot. A good greeter system, I said, is the best way to put new worshipers at ease.Hometown Heroes Please take time to remember our local “heroes” who are serving in war zones around the world.
