Indians fall in coach’s debut By CLAUDE VINSON The Byhalia Indians took to the gridiron last Friday night to start their season. They had a tough 5A opponent to contend with at home. The Horn Lake Eagles brought a large contingent of players and supporters. There was also a huge crowd of Byhalia fans on hand. This was the Indians’ debut game under new head coach Markeith Washington. Turnovers hurt Holly High By BARRY BURLESON Coach Clifford Brown said he slept good Friday night despite his Holly High Hawks’ loss to start the season. Class 3A Holly Springs ventured into nearby Tennessee and fell 42-29 to big school Cordova. MA Patriots drop district game to Kirk By BARRY BURLESON It was simple for coach Keith Wicker to sum up Marshall Academy’s 20-0 loss to rival Kirk Friday night. “They just physically whipped us up front, offensively and defensively,” Wicker said. If you have pigskin in your hide, then you know that after hearing and reading as coaches extol the expectant virtues of their specific programs, you can become quite antsy about the time frame. Of course, none of the foregoing hinders the discussion of the most favored sport. Junior high Patriots rout Kirk Chase Ferrell ran for 101 yards and scored two touchdowns in leading the Marshall Academy junior high Patriots to a 32-8 win at Kirk Academy last Thursday. The freshman quarterback was also six of eight passing. Hunter Safety Class Sept. 8-10 at Byhalia High School There will be a Hunter Safety Class on September 8, 9 and 10 at the Byhalia High School Library from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. The school is located on Highway 309 North. Participants must be at least 10 years old, must attend all three nights and must bring their Social Security numbers. To register for the class, call 662-563-6330. Lady Patriots keep winning By BARRY BURLESON The Marshall Academy Lady Patriots remained unbeaten in district play last week with two wins over Carroll and one over Lee (Clarksdale). They also knocked off non-division foe North Delta and improved to 16-3 overall. Basketball meeting Thursday The Holly Springs Parks and Recreation Department will be having a coaches’ meeting for the adult basketball city league on Thursday, Sept. 4. It will begin at 6 p.m. at the Eddie L. Smith Jr. Multi-Purpose Building. The meeting is for anyone interested in coaching an adult basketball team or registering a team for the upcoming season. For more information, please call 662-252-4807. Marshall goes to 2-2 A long road trip Wednesday, Aug. 27, took its toll on the Marshall Academy soccer team. The Lady Patriots lost 4-1 to Manchester Academy, located in Yazoo City. Their season record went to 2-2. |
