Lady Pats win in OT
By BARRY BURLESON
The Marshall Academy soccer team opened its season with a huge win. The Lady Patriots knocked off conference foe Magnolia Heights 3-2 in overtime.
“I was very pleased with our effort,” said head coach Catherine Mirante. “In the past two seasons our biggest struggle was finishing. We would dominate the entire game but could never get the ball in the net. We did a much better job of that in this game.”
Emma Burleson scored two goals for Marshall. Anna Petree scored the goal in OT off an assist from Kimberly Cunningham.
“Three is a significant number of goals for a soccer game,” Mirante said. “If we can routinely score that often, we’ll be just fine throughout the season.”
The Lady Chiefs took a 1-0 lead in the first half. Then Burleson’s first goal later in the half knotted the score.
Burleson gave MA a 2-1 lead in the second half, but with less than 10 minutes to go, Magnolia Heights tied the contest.
Petree scored on the assist from Cunningham in the first of two 10-minute overtime periods. The Lady Patriots’ defense held the rest of the way.
“I was extremely pleased with our defense,” Mirante said. “We are starting three fullbacks who have never played the position before.”
Those players are Ali Hutchens, Sarah Cunningham and Sara Walker, and Mirante said, “They all exceeded my expectations and played very solid and aggressive defense.
“Megan Isbell is our returning sweeper, leading the defense, and she did a great job as well.”
This season the North Conference of Division II is broken down into two regions – West and East. Joining the Lady Patriots in the West Region are Magnolia Heights, Lee (Clarksdale) and Bayou. In the East Region are Indianola, Manchester, Heritage and Immanuel Christian.
Marshall will play each team in its region twice and each team in the other region once. All of those count toward region standings, and the top two teams from each region will advance to the state playoffs.
