| Marshall girls take second The Marshall
Academy Lady Patriots opened their softball season Saturday by placing
second out of 12 teams in the Bayou Tournament. In the first game, MA beat Lee Arkansas 11-0. Casey Gibson got the win on the mound. The Lady Patriots then blanked North Delta 8-0 with Lauren Alexander getting the pitching win. In the next game Class AA Marshall defeated Class AAA Pillow 3-2. Alexander got the victory. Those three wins gave the Lady Patriots a berth in the championship game versus Prairie View. Coach Susan Rodgers said the opposing team’s hitters came out strong, plus her MA squad had a few costly errors. The Lady Patriots fell 10-6. “But
our team never gave up. They battled to the end,” she said. “Our
offense was impressive. We were able to score 26 runs in four games.
Everyone in the lineup contributed, and the coaches are pleased with
how they started off the season.” The Lady Patriots wore black ribbons on their sleeves in memory of Terry Sawyer. “They wanted the family to know they were thinking of them,” Coach Rodgers said. MA,
the defending Class AA state champion, was scheduled to open district
play Tuesday of this week at Kirk Academy. The Lady Patriots then visit
Carroll on Thursday at 5 p.m. and play in the Kirk Tournament Friday
and Saturday. The first home games are next
Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 11-12, versus Lee (Clarksdale) and Indianola,
respectively. Game time for both is 4 p.m.
