Lady Patriots tune up for new season

Marshall Academy soccer coach Catherine Mirante got a preview of her 2008 team Saturday.

The Lady Patriots hosted Magnolia Heights and Starkville Academy in a jamboree, featuring 20-minute games.

Marshall ready to defend state title

The Marshall Academy fast-pitch softball team is focused on one word – repeat.

“That’s our number one goal,” said head coach Susan Rodgers.

Last fall the Lady Patriots hoisted the Class AA state championship trophy.

Silver medalist

Godfrey Fayne Jr. of Byhalia, with the Memphis Mustang Track Club, won the silver medal in the 1500 meter run and the bronze medal in the 800 meter run at the AAU Region 3A Track and Field Championship on July 10-13 at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He has advanced to the AAU National Track and Field Junior Olympics being held on July 23-August 2, at Eastern Michigan University, in Detroit, MI.

Hawks return solid nucleus for 2008

Clifford Brown can hardly wait until 12:01 a.m. next Monday, Aug. 4.

That’s when his Holly Springs High School Hawks will hold their annual “midnight practice” to officially kick off a new football season.

The Mississippi Shockers competitive softball teams will hold try-outs in August.

Cheering champions

The Marshall Academy varsity cheerleaders (above) brought home several honors from the Universal Cheerleaders Association Camp at the University of North Alabama June 24-27. The Marshall cheerleaders were camp cheer champions, camp pep rally champions and camp home pom champions. They won all superior ribbons and a spirit stick. They also placed third in the extreme routine dance. Members of the MA squad are (front, from left) Regan Murphy (captain), Lauren Alexander, Olivia Clanton (co-captain), Molly West, Lauren Poteet and Hannah Cook; (second row, same order) Alison Hutchens, Cameron Gant, Courtney Gibson; (third row, same order) Sarah Poteet, Callie Clanton, Lauralee Fant, Kelsey Shaw, Megan Isbell and Claire Liddy. (Right photo) Regan Murphy, (left), captain, and Olivia Clanton, co-captain, were chosen as UCA All-Stars at the University of North Alabama on June 27. They will be participating in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. It will be aired at 8 a.m. local time on NBC. Regan Murphy was also asked to try out for the UCA staff next summer. Cheerleader sponsor is Dwana McAlexander.
