Marshall Academy soccer coach Catherine Mirante got a preview of her 2008 team Saturday. The Lady Patriots hosted Magnolia Heights and Starkville Academy in a jamboree, featuring 20-minute games. MA beat the Lady Chiefs twice and lost twice to the Lady Volunteers. “I
was pleased with the outcome of the jamboree,” Mirante said. “We had a
great turnout of fans and an ideal situation to get some good game
experience for our players. “The
past two years we have gone into the first district game with
absolutely no prior game experience and that’s always an uneasy
feeling. The jamboree gave us a chance to get a few of the unknowns out
of the way so that hopefully we’re better prepared for that first game
on August 12.” Standouts
from Saturday’s jamboree contests were Amanda Rhea, who scored two
goals, and Kristin Mynatt, who Coach Mirante said “did an excellent job
at her first time in the goalkeeper position.” “Overall I was pleased with the entire team’s effort,” she said. “Over
the next couple of weeks we’ll be focusing especially on shooting
technique and, of course, our fitness levels. It takes an extraordinary
level of fitness to be able to play 80 minutes in nearly 100 degree
temperatures.” The Lady Patriots start the 12-game regular season by hosting Magnolia Heights Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 4:30 p.m.
