| Marshall wins camp at MRA By BARRY BURLESON Editor Coach
Craig Dailey said his Marshall Academy varsity girls wrapped up a
“tremendously successful” summer of basketball by claiming the Madison
Ridgeland Academy camp championship. The Lady
Patriots played approximately 20 summer league games versus such teams
as Magnolia Heights, Holly Springs, Byhalia, Ashland and others. They
played in the Southaven camp in early June and had a “good showing”
without Traci Rodgers, who was at church camp. The Marshall girls
played MRA, Southaven, DeSoto Central, Indianola, Harding Academy and
others. The recent MRA camp included Marvell,
Delta, MRA, Pillow, Columbia, East Rankin, North Delta, Heritage,
Washington, Canton and others. The Lady Patriots
beat East Rankin, who Dailey said is many people’s pre-season number
one in the Mississippi Private School Association, in the semi-finals
and then turned around and beat Pillow in the finals in overtime. “This was huge accomplishment for our kids,” he said. “Whipping up on these larger schools is always fun.” Dailey said his seniors – Regan Murphy, Molly West and Traci Rodgers – showed great leadership throughout the week. “Traci
showed all week why she was first team all MPSA last year,” he said.
“Molly and Regan were a force on defense and made our offense go by
freeing up our shooters with teeth-rattling screens.” The Lady Patriots also got big contributions from Emily Burk, Callie Clanton and Kelsey Shaw. “Emily
has developed into one of the best players in the MPSA,” Dailey said.
“The week without Traci versus the public school teams (in the
Southaven camp) really really established her as a go-to player. “Callie
was the buzz of the camp. I had three coaches ask who the knew girl
was. Kelsey had some huge minutes in the A-game, along with supplying a
lot of our B-team scoring. She had seven points at the end of the
Pillow game that gave us a huge boost.” The
Marshall B-team girls eliminated Canton’s A-Team in the B-tournament
and was the only team to beat the B-champion, Pillow, all week. “Sarah (Poteet), Lauralee (Fant), Emma (Elgin) and Lane (Cunningham) finished out our camp with a tremendous effort.” Dailey said the successful summer should translate into a successful 2008-09 basketball season. “This
is just the start of what this group is capable of,” he said. “They
have a shot at bringing Marshall girls back to the upper teams in the
MPSA and a chance at AA. If you can win the AA over the likes of Leake,
Brookhaven and Prairie View, you can make some noise in overall as
well.”
